Hunter is one of the most underrated defenders in Clash Royale, and with his evolution, he’s even better! He’s the perfect card to counter high-HP troops thanks to his absurd damage at close range, so he fits really well into most metas. I’ll take a look at three great decks featuring the Hunter, but first let’s check out how to play him and what his evolution does first.
How to Play Hunter
Hunter is one of the best cards in Clash Royale for countering tanks, and it’s not even close. When he’s at close range where all of the pellets from his shotgun land, the damage he deals is absurd. And while this makes him an obviously good counter for tanks and other high-HP troops, he’s also strong at defending against most other threats too. I recommend using Hunter exclusively to counter threats, not even really for support until you have the evo ready. He’s so explosive that you have to play around it.
Hunter doesn’t really favor any type of deck over another. As long as there are high-HP troops to kill and/or snare, he’s happy. For that reason, there are a million decks Hunter fits into, and very few that are truly “Hunter decks” at their core. He’s a perfect defender though, so that’s the role he’ll play to perfection here.
Hunter + Royal Giant Evo

Cards:
- Royal Giant (Evo)
- Hunter (Evo)
- Fisherman
- Fireball
- Skeletons
- Electro Spirit
- Barbarian Barrel
- Mega Knight
This is probably the deck I’ve seen Hunter in the most often. Maybe not this exact version, but there’s always some variant of Royal Giant deck that uses Hunter. The reason for this is simple. Royal Giant is a purely offensive troop with no real defense other than the knock-back from his evo. Hunter, on the other hand, is pure defense with little offensive capabilities other than some low buckshot damage to towers. This means that what one can’t do, the other probably can. They’re a great pair that have proven their strength alongside each other for years now, even before evolutions were a factor.
The rest of this deck just focuses on keeping Royal Giant alive. Fisherman can pull threats away from him or just slow down enemy win cons like Hog Rider or any other charging troop. Mega Knight is an efficient flying troop for low elixir, so I really like him for just helping keep the skies clear. Then we have quite a few cheap cards that can be for cycling or actually affect the game. Barbarian Barrel is the best of them, but Skeletons and Electro Spirit are also important. Then Fireball rounds the deck out, as it’s one of the best spells in the game and probably always will be.
As you might expect, this is by far a more aggressive deck. Royal Giant just does too much damage to take a passive role. This whole deck is perfect for trying to end games as fast as possible… hopefully with a win.
Hunter + Royal Hogs Evo & Three Musketeers

Cards:
- Hunter (Evo)
- Royal Hogs (Evo)
- Three Musketeers
- Golden Knight
- Ice Golem
- Barbarian Barrel
- Heal Spirit
- Tombstone
I’ve been excited to talk about the new Royal Hogs evo ever since we first saw it, and here it is. I’m sure I’ll do an article on them alone here soon, but for now here’s a very brief overview of what they do if you haven’t had the chance to check them out yet. The evolved Royal Hogs fly towards their first target and do damage upon landing. This increases their overall DPS, makes it easier to get them to towers, and prevents ground-based counters until they land. So, pair the evolved Hogs with Hunter for defense and a suite of great troops and we have a great deck.
So, to accompany the Hogs and Hunter, this deck has a couple of powerful cards to help them out. Three Musketeers are great now that they’ve been reworked, and Golden Knight has always been strong for filling the mid-HP tank role. The deck itself doesn’t have that many synergies in terms of combos, but every troop is unique on its own. We have all the pressure we need with Royal Hogs and counter-pushes, can defend against any threats, and even have a building for some extra ground defense.
Since this deck has a little bit of everything, there’s no one way to play it. If you prefer taking a more defensive route, that’s certainly a possibility if you focus more on Hunter and Golden Knight until opportunities for 3M or Hogs come up. Being super aggressive also works if you just spam Hogs and use Golden Knight to tank for them.
Battle Ram + Royal Ghost w/ Hunter Support

Cards:
- Battle Ram (Evo)
- Royal Ghost (Evo)
- Hunter
- Boss Bandit
- Wall Breakers
- Minions
- Arrows
- Electro Spirit
This deck is a bit unique, as it does not use Hunter as one of the evolutions. Since the Hunter is strong on his own without the evolution, I think it’s fair to look at a Hunter deck that uses him in that role. For the two evolutions in this deck, Battle Ram and Royal Ghost fill the spots. Battle Ram provides a constant threat, and the evolution allows you to do much more DPS with the Ram part. The Royal Ghost evolution might have taken a small nerf recently, but I still think he’s strong. Even nerfed, Royal Ghost evo is still a strong ground troop for a bunch of situations.
I think the most important non-evo card in this deck has got to be Boss Bandit. The damage the Boss deals is excellent, the champion ability makes it far more versatile, and the elixir cost isn’t too bad considering what you get. Then Wall Breakers fill a secondary win con role, allowing you to keep pushing damage even when Boss Bandit and Battle Ram aren’t available. Minions is the main air defense card here, which I like since it can handle Balloon easily. Since this deck doesn’t have any buildings, a good air defense card is essential. Then we have Arrows for obvious reasons and Electro Spirit to cycle back around for better cards.
This deck is naturally aggressive since it includes Boss Bandit, and the evolutions pushes that even further. Battle Ram has to be played aggressively, and Royal Ghost is strong for keeping the pressure applied. You can take a more passive role if you want to prioritize a big push, but I think keeping constant pressure on your opponent is the best way to win with this deck.
